Volunteer Program

Thank you for your interest in volunteering!

Leon County Humane Society depends on the support of committed, caring people to volunteer their time, talent and energy on behalf of the animals waiting for adoption. Volunteers are the foundation of our ability to better serve our community and especially the animals in need.

General Minimum Requirements

We need all volunteers to:

  • be 16 years of age or older
  • commit to at least 8 hours of service per month
  • commit to a minimum of 3 consecutive months of service
  • have reliable transportation
  • have reliable access to email and internet
  • be able to demonstrate good communication skills
  • be able to demonstrate flexibility and compassion for animals and people

How to become a volunteer:

Please create a profile and complete our Volunteer Application Form here. Applications are usually reviewed within a week. If you have any questions regarding your application, please email volunteers@leoncountyhumane.org

After your application is reviewed, the Volunteer Coordinator will email you to schedule an in-person interview. Following your interview, you may receive an offer to become a volunteer with us and we will schedule your New Volunteer Orientation!

Volunteer Opportunities

There are a variety of different volunteer opportunities available for different interests and skill sets. As our program grows, more opportunities may become available!

Kitty Care:

Every day we need volunteers for Kitty Care in the morning and evening. Kitty Care Volunteers are responsible for cleaning cages, scooping litter, refilling food and water, as well as assisting with comforting cats and helping them adjust or exercise. More experienced volunteers will be needed for helping assist with administering medications.

Reception:

If you have exceptional customer service skills, we need Reception Volunteers to welcome and assist guests in our front lobby during open hours. Reception Volunteers also need to be resourceful and responsible for becoming familiar with the protocols of the services we provide such as Pet Food Pantry Assistance and administering Spay and Neuter Vouchers.

Data Entry:

Several of the services we provide require physical forms to be entered into a digital format for data keeping. If you enjoy entering data into spreadsheets, we could use your help! Data Entry Volunteers need to be computer savvy and know their way around excel spreadsheets.

General Maintenance:

We need help with general upkeep of our facility! General maintenance volunteers would be helpful for taking care of our never-ending laundry, dishes, sorting donations, crate and cage cleaning, and helping keep us organized so that we can continue to serve our animals.

Facility and Yard Maintenance:

If you are handy and want to utilize your skills to help us out, we have a long list of maintenance needs for our facility. Facility and yard maintenance volunteers are always needed for various projects including building repairs, paint jobs, plumbing, electrical work, yard maintenance, and landscaping projects.

Transport Volunteer:

Transport Volunteers are always helpful to have on standby in case we need help transporting animals to and from vet appointments, or even occasionally long distances to and from rescues across the state. This type of volunteer is especially helpful during hurricane season.

Cat Socializer:

Cats staying in our facility also need some TLC! Having Cat Socializers come and visit really helps comfort the cats and kittens staying with us. Spending one on one time with someone reassuring also helps boost their confidence which is very beneficial to preventing and healing health issues and depression. Plus, kittens need a lot of exercise! If you love cats, have some extra time, and you find that you are very good at reading cat behavioral cues, please consider volunteering as a Cat Socializer!

Fostering:

If you are interested in fostering animals, please visit our foster information page here.

If you have a child under 16 years old that wants to earn volunteer hours, and you are willing to help them, they can earn 4 service hours a day from fostering with us!
