Maybelle, a Bloodhound, is about 3 years old. LCHS got her on 7/15/2025 from a rural shelter where she was at least 20 pounds underweight. She was too scared to eat in a shelter environment. Maybelle was immediately seen at Ox Bottom Animal Hospital to get started on a treatment plan. Since then she has reached a healthy weight of around 60 pounds. She is also up to date on vaccines, spayed, microchipped, and dewormed. She now loves to eat. Maybelle is heartworm positive and takes Apoquel for the itchies although her skin and coat look perfectly normal. She has been treated for an ear infection as well. Keep in mind that she may need to visit the vet to keep an eye on allergies and ear infections in the future. Be prepared.to purchase medications which can be pricey. Her foster mom doesn't have experience with Bloodhounds but imagines ears are always something that need attention with these guys. Maybelle will begin heartworm treatment soon.Maybelle's foster mom brought her home the same day that she was rescued by LCHS. Her foster home has 2 senior dogs and 3 cats. She wants to play with the dogs but one is too old and one is not interested. Maybelle could really use a dog friend to play with. She has been around a 6 year old boy occasionally with no obvious problems. However, she may be happiest in a home without younger kids that may spook her. She does not pay any attention to the cats but does love their litter boxes. Her foster family keeps the litter boxes out of Maybelle's reach.Bloodhounds have long legs. Maybelle first used those legs to check out the kitchen counters. She hasn't gotten anything off the counters yet but it's a good idea to keep the counters clear of food. Maybelle stays in a crate when not attended, at night, and when there is food on the stove. She bellowed loudly her first night in her foster home while in a crate in the living room and broke out of the crate. She was quiet all night after her crate was moved into the bedroom with her foster family. Maybelle continues to spend her nights crated in the bedroom. She'll stay quite in her crate for as long as needed when her foster mom is home. Her foster mom is now home with her most of the time and Maybelle has gotten spoiled by that. She did stay quietly in her crate when mom worked and came home for lunch. She can get use to that schedule again. Be prepared with a sturdy crate. Maybelle has a few quirks. She is shy and trusts her foster mom more than other people. Foster mom is the one that feeds her. Honestly, she will probably share her love with anyone that serves her meals. She will require patience and time to get use to living with and loving on new people. Maybelle is shy about getting in and out of the car. She rides fine once in the car. She walk OK on a leash but doesn't have much experience with it. Maybelle is happier running around and smelling a large fenced yard than she is taking car rides. Maybelle has bathroom accidents in the house once or twice a week. She needs to be taken outside as soon as she begins pacing around the house and after she eats. It sometimes takes 10 or more minutes for Maybelle to potty outside because she is very busy with her nose and ears to the ground. Her foster mom is working on sending her out in the fenced yard with the other dogs for potty breaks but she prefers mom's company. Maybelle has been known to pick up and run off with a full water bowl in the house. Her foster family uses a gravity waterer that can't be carried off. Maybelle also likes to eat paper towels if she can get her teeth on one, even from her foster mom's pocket. Maybelle requires a fenced yard. That's a lot of information! We would rather Maybelle's future home know what to expect than to be surprised. Please fill out an application for review or share Maybelle's page if you can't adopt a pet right now. Maybelle needs a special forever home!
