It’s getting hot! When you’re cooling down this summer, don’t forget about your pet. Read below for tips and tricks on how to cool down your best friend during the hottest months of the year.
Plan Exercise Times
On hot days plan to walk your pet in the mornings and evenings, when temperatures are the lowest. Avoid mid-day if possible, or if you have to, walk your dog on grass instead of concrete or asphalt and keep them hydrated.
Provide Shade and Water
While self-explanatory, we can’t overstate how important providing fresh, cool water and shade are for your pet if you’re outside with them. Tents, umbrellas, and overhead covers can lower temperatures and give much needed relief. Also take into consideration that fans do not cool down pets like they do people, so air conditioning and open airflow are important when providing shade.
Get Creative!
Giving water is good and all, but you can also get creative with how you cool your pet down. Making frozen treats, like fruit frozen in water or pet-friendly ice cream, can cool your pet while also providing them with fun enrichment! Kiddie pools filled with water or a sprinkler can also help by giving them something to play in.
Watch for Signs of Heatstroke
Just like humans, pets can get heatstroke. Look for signs such as excessive panting, glazed over eyes, rapid heartbeat, increase in thirst or drool, lethargy, vomiting, or deep red or purple gums. Senior and young pets are more at risk of developing heatstroke. Talk to your veterinarian if you’re worried your pet might be more susceptible to heatstroke.
Never Leave Your Pet in a Parked Car
Even with the AC running or the windows down, the interior of cars can quickly reach inhospitable temperatures. Leave your pet at home while running errands to ensure that they stay safe and healthy.
